Stitching the lines of Flora and fauna
Come and spend a relaxing day with artist Ruth Allen and embroiderer Deborah Davis.
You will spend a beautiful morning creating line drawings inspired by the botanical. We will be using carbon paper to trace over botanical imagery using a delicate line to capture the detail. We will be experimenting with different textures and layers through the use of collage and then emphasising the line with a fine liner pen.
You will work onto, paper, a canvas and fabric. The workshop is suitable for experienced sketchers and beginners.
You will then move on after lunch to embellishing your images with hand stitch. Deborah will share some of her favourite stitches with you including split stitch, stem stitch, chain stitches and her all-time love French knots.
The workshop is suitable for both experienced embroiderers and those who have never threaded a needle before. The focus is not on perfection or technical mastery, but on slowing down and enjoying the process.
All materials and equipment are provided, but you may want wish to bring your own tiny scraps of vintage/recycled fabrics, papers, lace, threads, buttons, beads and haberdashery
to personalise the work. We will be supplying botanical imagery but you may want to bring your own as source material. It is very unlikely that you will finish on the day. Slow stitch should be enjoyed and not rushed. However, you will leave with some gorgeous pieces and all the ideas that you need to continue at home
